Ahh, that New Year's Resolution(s). The 2 weeks worth of resolving to do X. No really, this time I will! Over the previous 18 months I've worked a lot on myself and learned one thing crucial to resolutions. They don't work. Goals and resolution are different and setting a resolution is not the same as setting a goal.
A resolution is a decision: I resolve to do A or I resolve not to do B.
A goal that is what you work toward: This year I'm going to do A and this is how.
It's a subtle difference, I grant you that. But say it out loud. This January I resolve to lose weight. Meh. Or this year I'm going to write a chapter a day so I have 1 completed book a months! Sooo unrealistic! What about life? Day job? Dog? Family? Sleep??
Now try: This January my goal is to lose 5 pounds. This January my goal is to write every day.
General vs specific. Here's a good article on Goals Vs. Resolutions: What's the Difference? It's from the National Eating Disorders Association but when I was searching for reasons why I disliked resolutions but liked goal setting, it came up.
